Executive Summary
The focus of the ‘Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP) Acute Adult: Deteriorating Patient’ is on recognition, response, review and reassessment to prevent further harm. The aim is to improve recognition and timely intervention for deteriorating patients.
This policy establishes a standardised framework for the timely recognition, escalation and management of the deteriorating adult in-patient across NHS Lothian’s acute sites. It aligns local practice with national guidance (NEWS2, SIGN 167, SPSP) to ensure consistent, person‑centred care and optimal outcomes for patients experiencing clinical decline.
